The shipyard of Menzel Bourguiba, set up in the North of Tunisia, is the most important shipyard in the South Mediterranean area. Built at the beginning of the 20th century under French protectorate as a naval repair base and arsenal, it became a state-run Tunisian company in 1963, operating under the name of SOCOMENA until, in 2004, the shipyard was privatised.
